GOSZTONYI Zoltán
1952, Kaposvár, woodcarver
His approach was defined by his mother’s tales, the village environment he was brought up in and the diversity of folk dance he discovered during his secondary school years. He chose learning about and passing on the carvings of the shepherds in Somogy as his life’s calling. The thoughts of the shepherds, who experience the closeness of nature every day, are conveyed to him by the objects they make, while he strives to display more profound content on his objects he makes for use today. He has participated in numerous exhibitions both at home and abroad. His most important recognitions are: Young Master of Folk Art (1987), Applied Folk Artist (1989), Antal Kapoli Prize (1992, 1998), Master of Folk Art (1999), Pro Cultura Hungariae (2007), Hungarian Heritage – Washington Smithsonian Folklife Festival (2013), Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit (2019). He has been a member of the public body of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2015.
